We have been to Jharna a couple of times now and think its the best indian restaurant in Belfast - lovely decor, excellent food and great service. It is reasonably priced for the quality of the food served.
This is one of my favorite restaurants, since the first visit about ten years ago. Ahmed the manager (in both Jharna Mk 1 & Mk 2) is always welcoming, polite & friendly. I find Indian food very filling, so the complementary poppadums & chutneys are more than enough as a starter: £40-ish for two main courses, rice, naan bread, bottle wine & trea/coffee isn't bad these days. The Chettinad Chicken is my personal favorite - hot, but well-balanced (not as heartburn-inducing as a vindaloo). I was informed that they use fresh chicken nowadays, not the frozen variety of yore. The decor has been the subject of much debate, but they have at least kept a 70s style cue in the form of flock red/gold wallpaper on the back wall! True, the Mk 1 felt more intimate, with subdued lighting and more space between tables, but Mk2 has more of a buzz (depends on your preference). the Mk 1 went off towards the end (food- and staff-wise), so I didn't return until over a year after the revamp (following positive comments from an Indian colleague) and was pleasantly surprised. There is a more local (to me) Indian Restaurant in a neighbouring city, which is good enough, but it does not offer complementary poppadums or liqueurs and charges more for main courses - they wonder why they aren't busy: in the current economic climate, friendliness and freebees get the customers, guys - that's why I'm sticking with the likes of the Jharna!
I have been 6 times in the last 6 months and the standard of both food and service is pretty good. They have had an early bird menu running which is very good value although the choices are a bit limited, but I can live with that.
Look forward to my next visit.
